Foundation courses are
generally organized for international students whose qualifications do not
satisfy the entrance requirements for admission to undergraduate degree courses
at British universities. They are of one year’s duration and typically comprise
the study of two or three academic subjects that are relevant to what the
student wants to study at university, study skills and English language. There
are science and engineering foundation courses, arts and Humanities foundation
courses and business studies related foundation courses Students should already
have a good knowledge of English at the level of at least 4.5 in the IELTS. For
entry to most of the courses, a score of 5.00 is required.
There is a wide variety of
institutions offering these courses. They range from universities to private
colleges. Some of the courses are
linked to and validated by particular universities and on the successful
completion of the course, students are guaranteed places at those universities.
Others are more general and students can
apply to a variety of institutions. In selecting a course, careful
consideration should be given to the choice of subjects that are available, who
is validating the course and whether it is linked to a particular university,
the history and track record of the course, whether a place is guaranteed at a
university and, of course, the tuition fees. In general, the courses organised
and taught by teachers employed by universities are more reputable.
The course is usually of one
year’s duration starting around the middle of September and ending towards the
end of June of the following year. A good course should offer advice to
students concerning the choice of degree course and university and application
procedure.
